Located in the Columbia Mountains region of British
Columbia’s interior wet belt, the park climate is characterized by high annual
precipitation, heavy snowfall, and relatively moderate winter temperatures.
The Pacific air stream is a major influence on the park’s
climate. Moisture-laden air from the Pacific, driven by the westerly winds,
moves eastward, climbing steadily toward the Rockies. Decreasing pressures,
expansion and cooling of the air masses result in high precipitation over the
Columbia Mountains. Most moisture falls as snow in Glacier National Park. Usual
snow season is from mid-October to mid-June, but snow can fall at any time of
year at higher elevations.
